My 6th album recorded for the RPM Challenge (2019), best experienced to its full intent with headphones in my humble opinion. A continuation of my exploration of instrumental solo acoustic 6-string guitar technique and melodies, the music found on this set of recordings spans themes ranging from mindfulness (Attentiveness, Honesty) to nature (Soaring Hawk, Cinnamon Fern), conservation (Great Auk), and healing (Calendula), from seeing, experiencing, and questioning the world through the eyes and mind of a very young toddling child (Statues) to global oneness (Culture Jam). There is even a piece written for my friend's faraway tropical snake, Quasimodo. In exploration of the music itself, my musical technique and approach focuses on telling the wordless stories not just though the melody and colour palette or pitches used but also via the timbre of the notes and texture of the sound that occurs between the notes, the feedback from the strings, and the resonance of the instrument's wood. This album is just as much about acoustics and psychoacoustic physics as it is about stirring up vivid natural imagery and emotive or introspective feelings rooted deep within oneself. To truly experience the music expressed here, it must be approached with openness and free of expectations - this is not what you will get from hearing Classic Rock or modern pop, R&B, or country on the radio, nor even from music composed centuries before in the Baroque or Classical Periods for that matter. It might better be approached the way someone might attempt to soak in a Debussy composition, with an open mind and not constrained within a box representing the structure of mainstream music we are used to hearing on a day to day basis. Impressionism, Minimalism, Post Modernism, terms we might apply to avant garde forms of art or literature can be debated whether they can actually apply to music, but I believe they can also be musical terms in some form and I have attempted to combine these concepts in the music found on this album titled "Calendula". With that, I leave this ramble in hopes we all can find the good spirit and positivity within ourselves upon listening. Enjoy - Dan
